I agree with most of your interpretations, although I think that the point of initiation was to bring the listener into another place/state. If you felt drugged or 'faded' in that song then I believe that the Weeknd fulfilled the purpose of that song. For the sake of art and proper portrayal of a certain ambiance or feeling, I think that the song deserves a higher grade.

Whoever wrote this article clearly, CLEARLY does not have an ear for Metal/Rock music. They don't get off synch in some tracks, it's meant to be that way. And you can hear the Metallica influence on tracks like 'Darkness Surrounding' and 'An Epic of Time Wasted.' You also mentioned Synyster on the "review" for 'Breaking their Hold' that this is their best track so far on the album, LMFAO you're an idiot dude, it's all Zack! Synyster didn't play anything else on this album other than the opening solo for 'To End the Rapture'.

So again, to whoever does like real music PLEASE disregard this bogus and biased "review".

The blood was insane but the special effects does deserve to have a higher score. The effects were unique.

You seem like you the taste of a 13-year-old. You care more about the effects and production than the core of their music. I can practically hear you "ooh"-ing to the flashy George Lucas effects. They definitely don't sound like any other band out there, I agree, but your scale is completely off. 80 on lyrics? They're still wading in their pool of self-pity that they were in 12 years ago. They hide behind vague "imagery" and say nothing. In fact, the best tracks are the ones that move away from that sort of theme, like Until It Breaks (which takes the underground hip hop scene and blows it up into cascading drums, samples, and keyboards; wonderful track, Brad's part is only one of the many highlights) or I'll Be Gone. The middle section of the album has a folk tinge that takes the listener on a journey with the band. Before starting work on the album, Chester took a drive across the US, listening to the band's entire discography along the way, hearing how the band changed its sound over time. This is the part where the production comes into play, they use different sounds to give the sensation of other environments (the chimes in Roads Untraveled like snow, the strings and almost ambient synths in I'll Be Gone produce an illusion of a grass-and-hills scenario). The tracks that focus on moving forward, moving on from whatever situation one is in, are definitely better, instead of those where they just whine like they have been for their earlier albums ("whining" i.e. Burn It Down, In My Remains, Powerless, Lost In The Echo). The album is too fractured to leave any significant impact at all, it feels like a bridge between A Thousand Suns and another "epic" work.

I was reading this, but what's the point of even having a vote if all you're going to do is disregard it and talk about whatever you picked? You might want to take a look at that for the next one of these. It's all well and good if you want to have an editors pick, but don't make it take precedence over the people's vote.

As you've read, I also displayed my disgust at the far-too-safe methods her producers employ. Sure, it IS possible that Carly isn't entirely at fault, but she is ultimately the one in the driver's seat. She controlled every turn during this process. She could have roped people in with the sugary "Call Me Maybe" and done a whole album similar to her far-superior debut.

Can she sing? Yeah, but it's nothing extraordinary, so she really has to rely on stronger melodies, something she could have improved herself. I apologize if my review has hurt you as I hate when I read reviews that slam artists I love, but I gave the album a fair chance and was burned by it. Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback, thoguh!

Blame the music industry though, not the artist. Carly Rae is actually talented, just listen to her first album "Tug of War". It's very different from this and I believe she actually wrote most of it herself. But I hate how the music industry is trying to make everyone sound the same. Music should be art, not mass production. (Owl City is actually really talented too by the way, his latest album is just not written all by himself but he also worked with producers this time who were apparently only interested in money).

I am sorry, but the fact that you rated this TERRIBLE album 10 points above Meteora is just sad, this album should be 60-70 overall. This is nowhere NEAR as good as legendary Hybrid Theory either.

Good review except I thought I'll be gone should've been rated in the low 80's. Roads untravelled isn't terrible. Deserved a 65. Lastly, I think Lost in the Echo should have gotten a 98 or 99 cause of how AWESOME it is! After that beginning I was bored besides for Victimized. Its not that I don't like the slower songs. Theyre just not something that would appear on my Top 25 Most Played list on my IPod.

Great review. I respect Linkin Park for this release, it's a very mature record for them and blends previous efforts very well. I like how the album has a nice mixture of everything for everyone! :)

Good review, I enjoyed the first half of the album, while the later half is very mediocre to almost pretty bad.

Songs like Lost in the Echo and Victimized we're tracks I have been waiting for since 2007 and that is the Linkin Park I fell in love with.

I hope the next album they will get rid of the too much soft stuff. I don't necessairely hate it, but I think Linkin Park is better producing harder material than the softer thing.

I only hoped they would tune their guitars a bit lower and more gain/distortion on it. To give it that more raw Hybrid Theory feel. Now it's a bit too 'polished'.

Still a good record and 100% better than their previous two albums.

Just listened to it for the first time, it's good to hear they are bringing back some good solid vocals. To right though was missing a bit of a kick.
My altime cd/DVD is their live in Texas when he screams in place for my head I wet up everytime.
Fingers crossed we get some of that on the rest of the album.
Can't wait till they tour down here in Aus.
